Just had a chat with a rep...

Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK55407060731X
Chris: hello?
Lizzie: Hello, how may I help you?
Lizzie: May I know what seems to be the problem?
Chris: yes i am thinking of purchasing the magic jack plus
Lizzie: Sure.
Chris: however, i must know if i can port my landline number from AT&T to magic jack plus
Lizzie: Yes, you can Chris.
Chris: this is a LANDLINE number not a cell number
Chris: is it possible>
Chris: ?
Lizzie: Yes, that is okay.
Lizzie: It is possible.
Chris: so i just pay the $20 fee and my current landline number will become my magicjack plus number?
Lizzie: Yes, that is right.
Chris: ok that reassures my decision
Chris: to purchase the magic jack plus
Chris: however, why does the FAQ online say that number porting is in BETA testing?
Lizzie: But you need to register first your magicJack plus first before you can port the landline number.
Lizzie: We can now port your landline number to be your magicJack plus number.
Chris: i just want to make sure 100% before buying the magicjack plus that I can port
Chris: ahh ok thank you, when will I be able to purchase the magic jack plus in store?
Lizzie: Yes, I am 100 % sure that you can port your landline number.
Lizzie: No.
Chris: ?
Lizzie: You will have to order through phone and the Toll Free : 1-800-509-1709. That is where you can purchase magicJack Plus.
Lizzie: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Chris: ok can I also get the pricing?
Lizzie: Yes.
Lizzie: You can get the price once you order.
Lizzie: magicJack plus device cost $69.95.
Chris: and 1 year service thereafter costs how much?
Lizzie: Plus the shipping and handling cost $7.95.
Chris: ok what about renewal service
Lizzie: One year plan cost $29.95.
Chris: ok thank you very much! so the only way to order is through the phone?
Lizzie: My pleasure.
Chris: Are you sure they will not be available in-stores?
Lizzie: Yes, only through phone.
Lizzie: Yes, I am sure.
Lizzie: That is only through phone.
Lizzie: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Chris: no that is all thank you
|
Basically:
1) Number Porting is 100% functional ($20)
2) You can order ONLY through phone (1-800-509-1709). Not in stores.(?)
3) $69.95 + $7.95 shipping
4) each additional year thereafter $29.95
So...how did you guys order it for $49.95? What number did you use? =D |

Just a heads up for everyone, I just called (1-800-509-1709) and they are currently saying that number porting is not available yet with the magicJack Plus. I had to hit the * to listen to a recording about magicJack Plus and discovered this information. Also note magicJack Plus is sold with 4.8% regulatory fee that is added to your purchase price. |

Just ordered one at the above 1-800-509-1709 phone number.
Call went smooth and I added 5 years @ $19.95 a year for a total of six years.
Only thing I didn't like was no total amount due at the end of the call.
If the new MJ+ works as good as the old one I'm sure I'll be happy.
The $69.95 gets you the device plus one year of service.

The way I look at it with AT&T I could have blown that amount ($100) in one or two monthly phone bills.
Whats up that I might regret ? |

One thing, I haven't followed it that closely, but in the past they played games with that 5 year addition so they may have changed it. But it used to be you didn't get 6 years you only got 5 years, there was something in the fine print. So you might want to check your renewal date after you register it to see if you got 5 or 6 years.
This forum is littered with posts from users who went with the 5 years on the regular MJ and wished they hadn't. If they are charging $30 a year for the renewal on the plus and you got it for $20 an year, that's (obviously) $10 a year, but less than $1 a month. I love (obviously) my MJ. I just wouldn't pay the extra up-front for the small extra savings, since something might come out next year that is better, or MJ runs into issues. Plus I'm a cheap bastard who would hate seeing that money thrown away.
But overall compared to land-lines, the risk is very small. I threw out my land-line and T-Mobile when I went with MJ. With all the damn fees between the two I was in the $95 a month neighborhood. I went with a pre-paid cell that costs me less than $10 a month and MJ, so every day that goes by I look at my MJ, smile and pat it on the head. |

Can someone cross check this with a rep. Maybe they haven't updated their automated phone system to reflect the now operational phone porting? I'm hoping that's the case. |

Per my other response to you in the other thread, it sounds like it is available. Here is my chat with them:
Caleb: Hello, how may I help you?
Me: I was thinking of ordering one of the new MJ Plus's and I need to know what my porting options are
Caleb: Hi,Me
Me: Hi
Caleb: Okay
Me: Can I port a cell or landline number to it?
Caleb: Yes. you can port your number on magic jack plus.
Caleb: The fee of number porting is $19.95+ 4.8% US regulatory fee.total fee is $20.91 per transfer.
Me: So I should be able to port either my current cell or my current landline to it..correct?
Caleb: Yes. you can port your land line or cell phone number on magic jack plus.
Me: Great...thanks
It sounds like you may have ordered a Plus and are planning to port. If so, please post the result so we can have the, hopefully, final answer. |

It's good to see that they have invoices now that make sense and add up correctly.
I don't want to beat a dead horse but there is nothing on the invoice that says you have 6 years of service. It says you bought a 5 year plan. It looks like from their ordering page that they quit playing that game and you get the 6 with the regular MJ. Hopefully they have carried that policy over to the Plus. It would be hard to believe that they reverted back to that deception. But it is MJ. All the reviewers were apparently told the price was going to be $49.95. Of course that could be the price once it hits retailers since there is a lot less cost to them in shipping out 100 units to a Wal-Mart vs 1 at a time over the phone. |

I still prefer Nettalk for many known reason.
Don't get too excite with your MJ. You haven't seen the darkside yet! How long have you tested it for? An hour?
Enjoy! |

It costs them very little to mail that thing. And wallmart will take a huge cut, so it is now when they are really cashing in. |

How long have YOU tested a MJPlus? You have no basis for making any comparison between NetTalk and MJPlus. Maybe you should just stick to stalking Dan and what he spends his money on. What kind of cars does he drive? Where does he take his vacations? |

I was referring to the handling cost as opposed to the shipping cost. Depending on how automated they are, that handling cost spread out over 100 units vs 1 unit is a pretty good cost difference. But you are right, the % that a WalMart would take of the purchase price per unit is much larger than any handling or shipping cost involved.
With that high profit margin through their phone sales, it makes you wonder why they aren't promoting it yet. Their web-site still says nothing about it unless you do a search in their FAQ's. This forum is probably generating most of their sales. Still ironing out a few issues? Building up inventory? |

Great. Thanks for checking.
Turning off the auto renewal is always smart. Of course 6 years from now we may be paying for everything out of Bank of China accounts. |

Magic Jack Plus can be ordered at this website spinxk.com for $69.95. That includes the 1 year of service. MJ Chat says that phone number can be ported from current MJ to MJP. The site has a decent return policy.
May be worth trying if anyone is leery of ordering over the phone

MJ+ handles incoming calls faster and better than the older MJ USB dongle.
Old one would wait about two rings before MJ would start ringing, With MJ+ it is almost an instant connection/caller ID pops up fast.
I've tested the heck out of this little MJ+ device on cable Internet and it works very well !

I'm a old electronics tech, rest assured it's been looked over closely.
Speed, quality of call, packet flow rate and side by side testing.
Each device will need 91K data rate to work smoothly.
The onboard ARM processor runs very fast. |

Adding some information about registration:
I registered my MJ+ by plugging it into a computer, after a lucky you upgrade I entered my email address, phone number selection and the plan redemption code from the email when asked.
Once the phone number appears on the dial pad your MJ+ is ready for stand alone operation, shut down computer and disconnect from USB,connect Ethernet to MJ+,connect phone to MJ+ and USB power supply provided. |

The PR person that hooked us up with the MagicJack Plus review sample sent this info:
Julie -
I have some updates for you on the magicJack Plus:
* The magicJack Plus will be officially available this week on
http://www.magicJack.com . Available in major
retailers before the holidays.
* Number porting capability will be included.
* The magicJack Plus will be sold for $69.95 but all current users of the
original magicJack will be able to upgrade for only 50% of that cost for
60 days. This will include the device and first year of service.
* Renewal will remain at the $29.95 annual rate. This is an increase from
what it has been in the past. It was always 19.95 before, now it will be
$29.95. This is the first price increase magicJack has ever had.
* Also, a magicJack mobile app called magicJack APP for iPad, iPhone and
iTouch (effectively turning the iTouch into a phone a rather cheap one)
is in the works which should be available by the end of the fall.

Interesting. My renewal is due in early November. If they actually do offer it at 50% off, I may take an un-planned plunge. |

The MJ+ has been running smooth for seven+ days now. .
To be fair I'm on cable Internet and the older MJ has for the most part preformed well for me.
I'm running a Linksys-wired+wireless N router and Motorola surfboard cable modem.
I registered the device by plugging the MJ+ into the USB port of my old MagicJack machine, after the lucky you upgrade it proceeded into the registration screens automatically.
I'm running two V-tech phones, a modern GE wall phone and a Dish Network HD receiver for the caller ID display, all connected on the house phone wires (must be isolated from the phone company to use!!). Everything works great.
Blue LED in front window means MJ+ is running and has USB Power, Ethernet left hand green LED means you are connected, Ethernet right hand yellow LED means link established, flashing yellow/green indicates data flow
So far no problems at all !, amazing technology in a tic-tac box.

My MJ has almost 3 years remaining and prepaid international calling credits. If these won't transfer to the MJ+, there's no reason for me to "upgrade". |

I have run across some chatter about the MJ+ handling faxes much better than the original MJ, Something to do with the new HD audio.
I haven't tested faxing yet but if it works better I will start a new thread on the subject. |

I was curious about their HDVoice claims. However, their COO was the first keynote speaker at ITExpo last week in Austin TX. I missed that session as I was driving in from Houston.
Later one I went by their booth on the exhibition show floor. I asked about the HDVoice issue and the guy in the booth looked at me blankly. He said it wasn't implemented yet, even with the MJ+ device. That somewhat suggests that its just another attempt at marketing bluster, with little basis in reality.

Mr. Graves could be 100% correct with his conclusion. But, in my opinion, a blank stare and then a "it's not implemented yet" response, from a guy at a trade show booth, is not exactly a strong source. |

I have had several test faxes sent and received with an HP office jet printer-scanner-fax connect to a MagicJack PLUS, all I can say is it seems to work OK .
Had to resend one outgoing fax. |
