I only have a laptop. Can I plug magicjack into my cable modem or router, or does it have to be plugged into my laptop? And I have to leave my laptop on, right? What are my options?

I'd appreciate your advice as I can see there is lots of expertise on this site.
thank you!

Since it is the Orig MJ, yes you have to have it plugged into the USB port of your laptop in order to use it. Obviously your laptop needs to be on for as long as you want to make or receive calls. You can not use sleep or hibernate mode as your MJ will NOT work.
Only the newer MJ Plus is able to be plugged directly into your router ( after you plug it into your PC first to register it.)
Hope this helps.

If you wanted to continue using your existing mJ without having to have your laptop on all the time, you could buy a magicJack-ready thin client. (Google it). It's a small windows computer, usually the size of a modem or router that connects your usb device to the internet and is cheap enough electrically-speaking to leave on full time. Because a thin client doesn't need to have a monitor full time, you could just use one you already own to set it up and use Remote Desktop for any future windows updates. A lot of people used this method before the mJ+ became available.

Of course, you'll spend 40 or more dollars for a thin client (likely re-purposed), or you could just buy the mJ+ instead of renewing your existing mJ and re-purpose your usb device for the Google Voice app on your laptop.
