Probably the latter.
As soon as I got an acknowledgement that a tech. was with me, it stated his credentials, and gave me a choice asking me what I was willing to pay on a sliding scale. There were two scales and I don't remember exactly what the options were, but something like urgent, midscale (the default) and not so urgent. The minimum was $18. I wasn't brave enough to see what the urgent choice gave me. I guess it would be a simple matter to go back and give it another try to see the details, but I was so astonished at what I saw I closed the program.
Sorry I can't give you more credible info.

Edit: For what it is worth, MagicJack still works just fine on my adjacent computer at least for the moment (XPPro 64 bit). I am into flightsim pretty heavy and have the two computers (Original useing MagicJack was 32bit) home networked.
Very strange! |
I'm curious, was the $38 part of the regular tech support routine at the beginning? Or once it got complicated for them and it was passed to a 10% expert that they then asked for the fee? |

You are silly. That is not Official MJ Support; that's just some dumb targeted ad link you clicked.
Official MJ chat support is still free (at least for the time being).
Don't click this:

Probably am a bit silly, not a self proclaimed "whiz", but the link I went to was by a google search to "Official magicJack.com" and "Tech Chat is Now Available 24 Hours..." as follows:
http://www.magicjack.com/techchat/
Then selected "If you are not satisfied with the answer below, Click here to chat with a Live Agent Representative" A selection for "I'm Online! Start Chat" was provided for the mouse click.
I have no idea how another link snuck in assuming that it did, but am happy to know that service is still available without such charges.
In any case, I am thrilled to say that this morning I switched from my 64bit computer back to the 32bit unit where I normally have MagicJack installed and MagicJack enabled with no problems and seems to work fine. I hope this means the problem is solved on MagicJack's end, but time will tell.
Now if MagicJack would only add my local phone prefix like they have been promising that they would do for two years now. They keep telling me, "We are working on it." Their ad for local service is a bit misleading when one's next door neighbor has to call long distance to reach you on MagicJack. In fact, calling yourself for a test call is long distance. Some states only have one locality available.
Respectfully:

Yes, I suspected you ran into one of those ads. (Those kind of misleading targeted ads bug me a bit.) The one that often shows at the top of this forum works as you described.
I'm glad you got things straightened out. There is nothing silly about that. |

Let me take 2 wild guesses:
1. Your telephone company is small and/or rural?
2. When you try to call, you get 3 "fast busy" tones and are disconnected.
There are no technical issues. magicJack (MJ) can fix this at any time with the flick of a switch. They are just too cheap to pay the connection fees, so they are blocking these numbers (including all of Alaska).
There are a great deal of people addressing this issue in a(nother) unofficial forum on dslreports.com (it's free - I promise).
I recommend that you check out the topic "Forums VOIP etc Voice Over IP - VOIP MagicJack HELP- Magic Jack can't call local ISP area code" - the link for which is: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r24566829-HELP-Magic-Jack-cant-call-local-ISP-area-code
Some of us have received the following email message from magicJack with their interpretation of and "solution" to the issue:
"Dear magicJack Customer:
We are working on interconnecting with the telecommunications carrier for the telephone numbers you have been unable to reach. The current rates charged by carriers are cost prohibitive. There is a legal requirement for all companies to interconnect if one carrier requests to do so from the other carrier. We hope we will be successful in doing so.
In the meantime we would be happy to offer you a refund of your unused magicJack and related services per pro rata method, i.e., if used six months, the refund would be approximately $20.00.
Please return your magicJack to the following address and enclose a refund request that includes your name, magicJack phone number and full mailing address.
magicJack, LP
Attention: Consumer Issues Department
P. O. Box 16176
West Palm Beach, FL 33416
We will credit the form of payment you used to purchase your magicJack or mail you a check.
Should you choose to return your magicJack for a refund, future registrations may be prevented.
Sincerely,
magicJack Customer Care" |

Yes & No.
I can get rid of the ads, but the (now black) screen on the left is still there.
Open a command window.
Menu > Run > cmd
In the resulting window, type the following
(except for the part in <> - those are my comments for you!)
cd \windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -r hosts
notepad hosts
<now you are in editor. Insert the following line at the bottom of the file>
127.0.0.1 render.talk4free.com
< save the file as hosts.>
<Notepad will try to add ..txt on the end of the filename >
< Don't let it! Use Save AS and change the file type to ALL FILES >
<exit the editor>
attrib +r hosts
exit
<end of commands>
You should return to windows and the ads are gone. |

But just remember then you will no longer see the reminder from MJ when your account expires.
Then we will be getting messages here on how people's MJ is no longer working and if they wait to long to renew how they are not getting a full yr for their $20 ( as MJ uses the ORIGINAL experation date, not when you renew). Also in some cases people have lost their # by waiting to long.
So that is something to keep in mind. |

I've only heard one complaint about that (probably same one)
Usually it's:
how do I get my credit card info out of there / how did they get my credit card info? |

Trust me it will happen. Why do you think MJ removed the DND after one of their updates? They were tired of getting questions about why their MJ won't ring anymore. Because people forgot they had DND enabled. Also why our contact list is no longer stored on our PC's? Because when people formatted their MJ's ( by the advice of "support" ) they lost their contacts as they were not smart enough to save them elsewhere. So they took that away and now have it on THEIR servers.
It will happen where people forget to renew and then the crap hits the fan here....
There always unintended consequences in pretty much everything.... |

Good points!
FYI There's a script on dslreports.com that amigo_boy wrote to backup your contacts list. I've downloaded it, but not got around to trying it. |

Yeah I saw that but I use MagicFeatures and having a contact list on MJ isnt as important to me anymore as now I need to enter my contacts into MF speed dial section in order to have the name and number come up on my phone. The last update from MJ REALLY messed things up for a lot of people and Redpepper really came through with his update to MagicFeatures to make everything work again. Considering they were blindsided by the MJ update as well. They really stand behind their products..

Magic features sounds good. I did look at it briefly, but I think I'll wait until my telco's exchanges are unblocked.
With this gadget, it's nice there's some Good support for it from somebody. |

Another vote for redpepper and crew. They put MJ support to shame (not that MJ needs any help on that score). Makes you wish redpepper's team had developed a similar magicJack device. |

"1. Your telephone company is small and/or rural?"
Well, not really. It was Verizon until recently when Frontier took over in most of West Virginia. Same Scenario with either.
"2. When you try to call, you get 3 "fast busy" tones and are disconnected"
This really has never happend to me. We have had no problems making calls anywhere so far and my wife makes a lot of them. I seldom receive calls on MJ so am just assuming that there is no problem there. (Still have my Frontier Phone service to receive calls and for local service).
The issue to me is the unavialability of Phone Prefixes almost anywhere unless one is lucky enough to live at the one, or few locations where they are provided in a state. Ironically, WV does have a half dozen or so, but naturally none are for my location. Virginia for example has only one prefix available for the whole state which is relatively in the middle of nowhere seems to me. Arlington in the DC area nor the Va. Capital have any prefixes. By comparison, some localities have several (Baton Rouge for example).
Thanks for the link. Interesting reading.

Yea, I think the promo code is "Santa Claus", because you have to believe in him if you think anything MJ promises happens anywhere close to when it should. |

Well, that's hard to tell, because the title is "MagicJack screen".

Sure!
However I just wanted to point out that the threads don't always stay exactly on target.
And a few of us are still trying to help you.
And, fitter108 wrote: | asked "Had anyone if anyone actually got rid of the banner and if so how? |
So I told him and you how black-out (but not remove that part of) the screen. I was kinda waiting to hear back from you if blacking out the ads was any help. AFAIK - that's as close as you can get it .
tdbone1 wrote: |

Some saw the error - don't thing they had the code.
So I'm guessing that "No" - no one has any info on the magicTalk and promo code
Didn't someone fix it by swapping USB cables, so that was suggested also. Did that help?
tdbone1 wrote: | i thought along time ago we were supposed to getting magictalk. what is going on? |
Well, I thought I was getting a device with which I could call "anyone in the US and Canada" So, you're not the only one who's disappointed.
It's the usual - "vaporware" crap - same as a lot of companies do.
Take Microsoft next windows release date as promise and add 2 years.
Their site also says Linux support will be done in the first Quarter
of 2010 . It's not done yet. no it's where near working - according to one Live Vchat I had once upon a time.
Maybe that will change someday and magicJack won't post any ads that they can't keep to, but I doubt it.
Until then, that's appeared to be the all you can do - except keep monitoring the thread - someone may see it and answer a year from now.
tdbone1 wrote: |
i want to try it out or read about it.
| You may have to wait awhile longer to try it.
And IMHO - I personally would not want to be a beta-tester for this.
If you want to read about it, probably all of the known data is contained just in their press releases. I think that's the same date that they hand a copy to their programmers and tell them that they're supposed to write it.
Since apparently this is no longer "magicJack Screen".
May I suggest that you start a new post with a title that reflects the actual current problem and maybe you'll get some more new people to get interested in it. - or realize that may have some info - if not an answer.

Well, she didn't say she was one of their top 10% of support people - like 95% of them currently are!
No wonder she's looking for side-work...
I just looked at all 3 of her posts and they're totally identical - so she's one of their out-of-work chat-bots. |

Last week I plugged in my MJ adn got the MT prompt. Since I didnt have the code, I just tried to close the window to no avail. After trying numerous times I just unplugged the damn thing. When I plugged it back in I got the 'Lucky You' screen and thought all was fine. Ne next screen was bad, Defective jack, contact support. I tried it on 3 different PC's and got the same error. I contacted support and spent about three hours with them trying numerous fixes without any luck. I emailed Dan on 10/8/10 explaining my woes. On 10/13/10 I received a reply that they would supply a new one FREE OF CHARGE. I was dumbfounded. I replied today, 10/13/10, that yes I would like a new one and was informed within an hour that one will be shipped 10/14/10. I am truly impressed. Thank you for the address. |

thanks for the quick replies.
gtalk only works on desktops (as far as voice)
MagicTalk is VaporWare.
CSipSimple lets you enter your magicjack credentials to use your cellphone as a "portable" phone over wifi....but for some reason it works in my house over wifi (when the mj dongle is removed) but if i goto town and use it on an openwifi it appears to not work
i not sure if its just a problem with the Access Points i am connecting to or mj detecting i am not connected to the network the dongle was last being used on.
not sure
anyhow i think i just going to "BUY" Skype and be done with it. |

I'd guess it's in their AI programming. They're not obeying the 3 rules of robotics - but then again - Dan always was a rebel (without a clue). |

As other users have reported, today I could not get my MagicJack software to fully load due to the "MagicTalk" window that kept popping open. I would click "Close" and it would just keep popping back open and blocking MagicJack from fully starting.
I plugged my MagicJack directly into my PC's USB port with no USB extension cable and then it finally started working.
MagicJack is such a ridiculous and poorly implemented product. They continue to create more and more issues for their users and the support is terrible. I'm looking for alternatives now, I might go with Ooma. |

Has anyone figures out a fix for this yet on windows 7, I have not been able to use my phone for 3 days now. 3 hours with the tech help did nothing but waste my time. |

The USB cable has nothing to do with the MagicTalk issue FYI. I threw mine out 6 months ago. I get the MagicTalk crap about every 2 weeks at this point. I grit my teeth and swear at MJ under my breath, pull out my device, push it back in, restart MJ, and everything is fine. For about 2 weeks.
If this is all that happens to my MJ, I will be happier than a pig in whatever. |

For some people YES that short cable can fix this issue. If you boot without your dongle ( ok in your case without your MJ DONGLE you will get the MT screen. So USUALLY it means for some reason your USB port is not seeing the MJ dongle and therefore bringing up the MT screen. This all started when MJ did the BIG MJ 2.0 update when they gave the softphone the ability to run both MJ and MT.
You may want to try a different USB port OR use a powered hub. I use one and have not once seen that screen unless I boot without the MJ dongle plugged in as a test to see that screen.
Now does this mean EVERYONE who has the MT screen makes it a usb issue? Probably not but so far everyone I have seen it was..
Of course Y.M.M.V. |

I guess since technically I have to re-install the dongle, that makes it some kind of a USB issue. I have a powered hub, so not sure, and it doesn't bother me too much anyways. But certainly if USB is the problem that stupid cable is only going to make it worse. |

Dont forget the more and more you plug and unplug the MJ the larger the risk of it breaking.. It is not exactly the most sturdy device made.. |

I have Magic Jack and am tired of it not working all the time, I went two days without getting any calls. Come to find out a friend had been trying to call all that time and could never get through. I tried calling that phone using my skype and it wouldn't go through, but I could use that phone and call out.
Has Magic Talk got all the bugs out without any windows poping up and how does it work if it does not use the jack, does it use a headset instead of a phone??? |

I signed up for a free account with mT but haven't used it much. The software looks just like the mJ software, so I suspect it exhibits similar behavior. It's in Beta so I doubt "all the bugs" have been worked out. You can use any windows sound device for your audio, so USB headset, speaker/mic jack headset, USB phone, etc.
I believe their are a few solutions to the software popping up, just search the forum. Or you could run your mJ on a different computer. I use an old Pentium 3 IBM Thinkpad that I got free (because it was so old) for mine, that way it doesn't interfere with me on my main computer.

As a troubled MagicJack user, you really could have answered this question on your own. MagicJack has been around for what, 4..5 years, I really don't know. BUT, in that amount of time, they haven't gotten all the bugs out of MJ. What in your MJ experience gives you any reason to think it won't take that long, if ever, for them to make MagicTalk bug free? |

The ONLY way I can bring MagicJACK back is after MagicTALK takes over the screen/window is to unplug the MagicJACK USB from my computer (without shutting down the MagicTALK first) then plugging the MagicJACK back in. So far this has worked for me.
I have Windows 7 Home Premier ( 64 version ) on a Dell I5 . |

I have Windows 7, 64-bit, and use a powered USB hub. I got the Magictalk banner after the power went out and I rebooted. I tried MJ Live Chat support, but got disconnected after a half hour last night. They had me unplug the dongle, ctrl+alt=delete to kill the process, uninstall Magicjack from control panel, download and run http://www.nexcopy.com/downloads/USBScrub.zipdownload and run
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9645377then reinstall from un "upgrade" link http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/magicJackSetup.exe
That didn't work, but it got me started. I unplugged the dongle, killed the process, uninstalled the program, then manually deleted the entries in the AppData, Roaming, mjusbsp folder. I discovered that the USBScrub program isn't compatible with Windows 7, so I tried using CC cleaner and cleaned the registry (also cleaned temporary internet files), then unplugged the powered USB hub, restarted the PC, reinstalled MagicJack from the upgrade link, plugged back in the powered USB hub with the MJ dongle, then clicked on the icon to launch MagicJack. The softphone loaded showing MagicJack just like the good old days, and the MagicTalk screen was finally gone. Good luck ... hope this helps somebody else. |

First off, I want to thank this poster and all the others on here for all the help!!!
I had problems getting MagicJack to work initially last year when I bought one [on-line with Techies nearly 24 hours straight ...(yeah, I feel your pain for some on here who posted that they thought the tech system merely hung up on them)...and I did my very best to stay civil while repeating my story umpteen times and having them tell me to do the same thing that did not work last time over and over and over ad infinitum...Oh wait, ?!?!?....a higher up techie will take my call--all right, some action finally .....oops, I dropped that customer ..too bad so sad...oh well, they will probably realize they are waiting for no one and call back in 20 minutes or so ...]!!! I told my sad tale over and over and over...so I feel everyone's frustration. (Finally, I think someone had me link to an update at MJ that made it work finally for me, so PLEASE check for updates even if you are new to MJ!!!!!--apparently one had just come out close to my purchase and sign up on-line...)
On the positive side, MJ works very well for me in rural AmericaI can hear others well and they can hear me fineno noisiness on the line either(I use computer microphone and my headphones from my speakers as my phone did not work with it).
So....to make a long story longer.when MagicTalk was now keeping my MJ from starting at all ...Grrrrr ...was all I could think!!!!
I read all of the posts here and .....
Here is what worked for me and so far I DO NOT see that MagicTalk thingy now at all and MJ still retains other ads or update notices or whatever and it works just fine...I would suggest you make sure you have a System Restore point close to when you start to do these things or put one in there just in case...
I have an older computer (a veritable dinosaur in the world of computers, so there is hope for you if yours is older too) and Windows XP...
I initially tried using CCleaner only on my Registry items, but that did not seem to work for me, so I did all of the above steps (THANK YOU Nateblack972) "They had me unplug the dongle, ctrl+alt=delete to kill the process, uninstall Magicjack from control panel, download and run http://www.nexcopy.com/downloads/USBScrub.zipdownload and run
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9645377then reinstall from un "upgrade" link http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/magicJackSetup.exe" except I did not do the Microsoft 9645377 [but I believe I already did what this does or whatever in my 'puter system a while back, so I did not need to do that....] I believe the nexcopy download helped me immensely...it cleans up your USB ports--your devices will get "recognized" as new when you first plug them in, but not to worry==they will work ok and seem much cleaner to run now).
I also did go into Start-Control Panel-Network and Internet Connections-Internet Optons--(mine is set to medium-high range and I left it there about accepting cookies}-Security-then I put "reg.talkfree.com" in my Restricted sites folder....then close and ok...
WELLA.. so far so good ..no more Magictalk screen and my MJ is back purring along like a kitten...[Purr-haps the above paragraph here is all one really has to do, but I don't know...]...GOOD LUCK TO ALL...
Hope this helps someone else...
THANKS to all posters here!!! (If this doesn't keep working for me, I will probably be back here to see what ELSE I can try...)

PS--to protect your Magicjack (and other connected things with USB), always use that "Safely remove hardware icon" that should be at the bottom in your taskbar (if it is not, Google it and there will be instructions on what to do if not)... I find it always for me says I cannot shut it down as it is being used...Just use keys control-alternate-delete to bring up Windows Task Manager window--go under "Processes" (all I can find is magicjack.exe in there now and click on it to highlight, then go down to the bottom and click "end process" then go back to Safely Remove hardware icon and click in there and stop the processes). |

OOps...I meant to say under restricted zone (my post above) : reg.talk4free.com.... BUT, I am not sure this keeps working anyway... [Maybe I should try going back to post by Kevin1211 Sep 15, 2010 and do the steps exactly as noted from MJ agent...just not wild about having to accept all cookies for a few hours or whatever etc.]. I have done so many things I am not sure exactly WHAT works...all I know is that dreaded Magictalk screen seems to periodically pop up and hang up my MagicJack, even after I think I have it solved for several starts and then...Aargh!!!!there it seems to be again...
When I try several things and eventually get MJ to work again I dunno what works on it any more Just when I want to use MJ the most is when it seems to hang up on that Magictalk beta popup thing...I close that and see the softphone, but it won't load contacts or anything--just sits there... Once I finally got the MJ to work after being with customer service for hours on end, it worked fine before that Magictalk screen started coming up (I could even hear fine and so could the person I called--I use a headset with my speakers and microphone). I don't know why that MagicTalk thing has to keep coming up--a little ad on the side of the softphone would be fine, but this screen holds the whole thing up. I don't want to register for more things if what I already have doesn't work...
My renewal is up soon...not sure a few free minutes is really worth all this hassle... And now I can't call several numbers anyway due to no 'interconnect' agreements or whatever... so now I never know what number I try to call next won't go through too...

Same here. Put MJ in new PC and the problem started. After several hours with techs I ended up with some strange phone number and could not get my old number back - techs kept passing me around.
Then the big mistake. I paid the 10.00 for Majic Talk and all the sudden my old number is back and MJ works like it did before.
MJ will not refund my 10.00 - I have no use for MT and downloaded to see if it would fix the problem.
I will not renew MJ, due this month, and will make it my mission to make sure none of my many international friends ever buy it. |

Good luck on your crusade.
I am on a personal mission to dissuade all my friends and acquaintances to stop using dihydrogen monoxide which has been scientifically proven to be a dangerous solvent.
Hope you are more convincing than I... |

You don't have to convince me! Dihydrogen monoxide can be very dangerous.
-It's a major component of acid rain.
-It has been linked to causing structural failure of the rivets and plates aboard the Titanic.
-Blamed for causing asphyxiation of swimmers in both urban and rural waterways.
-Has been found in all cancerous tumors, according to laboratory analysis.
-Has made vast areas of the southern hemisphere unfit for traditional methods of building construction, due to its instability and prevalence.
-In its gaseous form, has caused severe skin burns to people.
-Is vented in large quantities by nuclear power plants, virtually unregulated.
-Leading cause of erosion to national parks and monuments.
-Has been detected in human urine and tears.
-This same substance, which is used by car washes around the globe, is easily inhaled, and finds its way into the nation's waterways. Ultimately, it ends up being sprayed on our food supply crops through irrigation practices. |

Got a fix here that worked for me, got it from a magicjack agent...
1. Click the "Start" button then "Settings" then "Control Panel" then go to "Internet Options", under "Privacy" tab, slide the bar down to "Accept all cookies". Under "Security" tab, click on "Trusted Sites" then click the "Sites" button.
2. Un-check the box at the bottom left of the window that says "Require Server Verification".
3. Type the following address into the text bar, reg.talk4free.com then click the "Add" button, and also type in the following address, my.magicJack.com and click "Add" then "Close" then "OK".
4. Unplug the magic jack and plug it back into a different usb port after 20 seconds
Only thing is you may have to accept all coofies for a while. A few hours is what she told me.
*******************************************
I did the above steps, but find that the MT screen still comes up--I just make sure to use my MJ icon on the desktop first, which brings up the MT screen, then plug in my MJ dongle and the MT screen then disappears--It doesn't get rid of the screen, but it DOES make the softphone at least WORK vs. just hang there if I click on the MJ icon on the desktop first.... You can put cookies back into whatever zone you want after a bit I think, as mine have some restriction. This has consistently worked several times now.
I DID talk to customer service for several hours one afternoon--about this problem and about the numbers I can no longer call (small communities)--with no interconnect agreements... I copied down the chats and put them on there the next time they passed me on to someone else and that seemed to cut down on them offering the same solutions over and over and over, but they ended up saying someone from engineering or whatever would "email me" and they certainly acted like they never heard of the "interconnection agreement" problems . They also assured me the MT screen problem would be resolved for me...ha ha ha ...not so...I still have to make sure to click the desktop icon and then plug in the dongle thingy like before I called customer service. I again was pretty sure they just hang up (and I was nothing but polite over and over and over)--finally I asked them not to hang up and the last one I said bye now to over and over as I guess they did not want me to think they hung up like some others
I DID renew as I can still call the long distance number I call the most, but I hope they fix the numbers we can no longer call. It isn't much of a second line for me any more as the local area I am in I cannot call any more and there are no MJ numbers available in that area either.
No email from engineering either...surprise surprise I am not holding my breath on that one.
[I DID manage to find a phone that works when I plug it into the dongle...It is a simple corded GE phone model number 29255GC2-C--Make sure you DO go up under MENU on your splash screen and under Volume/headset control make sure you mark "telephone" too... ]
