I'm looking for all the update files that have occurred since the release of the Magic Jack Plus.

I'm almost certain that the problems with the plus dropping calls while hooked to the router stems from the Feb 1st upgrade to the MJ+. In order to prove this I need the file that was released prior to Feb 1st. If people will simply file attach the files you have saved, I will sort them out and create a list of the updates.

I believe there are four or five updates since October.

Yes, this is a great idea. Let us know how it goes and if you're able to gain access to previous MJ+ updates.

Unless someone has the files and can post them. This experiment will not be completed.

How exactly can you test out an older version? Won't it update as soon as you're connected to the internet??

If these files are right .. you will unplug your internet and run the old firmware .. then unplug your MJ + from your computer and put it in
your router .. as MJ does not seem to be able to update when in Router
this why they ask you to plug your MJ+ into your computer .. were as my other VOIP can be updated from tech support in the router

Good luck

Ok, I down graded to the above October upgrade file. I have reconnected MJ plus to my modem/router, and will see how it goes.

I did the same. An incoming call lasted 45 min last night. Been awhile since we've been able to talk that long on our MJ+ so that's progress, but will believe the fix worked if there are no dropped calls all week.

Thanks to all for this idea. This forum has a lot of talented troubleshooters!

Just had another long incoming call (50 min) without any drops. Woohoo! This is starting to look up! Thanks to spc for providing the October upgrade link.

Do others have any news to report on the stability of incoming calls?

I want to thank SPC for providing us with the October Upgrade. By the way I tried the original file from August and had dropped calls.

I just loaded the October upgrade and will monitor the results with my wife who talks on the phone very frequently.

Thanks again for the files. I also want to bring everyone up to date on my discussions with MJ about the dropped call issue.

They actually sent me an email stating that they are aware of the dropped call issue and are working on a solution.

Interesting!!!! After they have been saying that it is the various routers that are causing the problem.

I have had two long calls (one from out of state) and haven't had any dropped calls. Time will tell though.

Must be doing something incorrect. Had the MJ+ plugged into the computer (same host that it was set up ) , had the internet disconnected, installed the old sofware and that was successful , however immediately it went into " your lucky getting upgraded" and the Feb 2012 software was re-installed.. Any Suggestions ? Confused

We also have updated the October version and will post back in about 1 week to see if we have any dropped calls. My wife uses the phone the most in making calls here in the USA and phone calls to China, so we can see in the phone calls are stable.

In order to downgrade the mj plus, how do you remove the Feb upgrade? Or do you uninstall the entire mj program? If you do this, it seems you would get he entire program when you try to reinstall the mj program.

Anyone please!

you had to have had the internet active for this to happen. Try again and immediately pull the mj out of the usb port and plug it into the router. So far I have gone one day without a dropped call with the October firmware update installed.

Good luck guys. I'll keep these files up a while longer.
I periodically for check upgrades here:

http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/magicJackSetup.exe

For those who may not know. To check version #, right clicking on the download go to "properties" & "details" tab.
In windows 7 just mouse over download & a window should popup showing ver #.

This sounds promising. I should go back to my chat with MJ and tell them what we have found.

Keep the feedback coming. I have not been around too much the last few days but I have had no dropped calls that I know of.

Thanks profster, spc, and others. I tried this yesterday, and so far, so good. I tested successfully with two 30+ minute calls, without drops.

I should also mention that I am now running a new-to-me DECT 6.0 cordless phone system (with link-to-cell) that I like a lot. I always *tried* to keep my old cordless phone system away from my WiFi, but may not have always been successful.

Keith, who hardly gets enough phone calls to do real testing...

Still no dropped calls since I went backward to the October firmware. I had another extensive long distance call last night with no problems. No problems on the shorter calls either.

Since going back to the October version we have not had any dropped calls in one week. This means for the MJ Plus users going through their routers, it is more stable without having the random drop issues we all have been getting since the February update.

Just hope and pray MJ doesnt go through with their plans to automatically update their devices whilst connected to the router as opposed to the PC as they do now.
Once they do that, you can roll back as often as you want but as soon as you are online MJ will update it to their current release.

Since I have actually had them admit that there is a problem with the dropped calls, and have received an email from them attesting to this, I am going to go back to them with the information you all have given me.

Can everyone that has reverted to the October update post their result by tomorrow at 4PM est. I will use this data to report to them.

I have had no dropped calls as well.

I don't do many long calls. However, I'd had several around 20 minutes and a few shorter ones. I have had dropped calls in the past, but none since the downgrade.

I just finished another long distance, hour long call with no problems. This time it was an incoming call. I'm beginning to feel like this firmware downgrade is the ticket.

I haven't encountered *any* dropped calls, in the 4 days I have been trying this (using the October update file on my magicJack Plus).

Thanks for passing the results along to MJ.

Ditto! What a breakthrough. Glad it's working well for everyone.

Some people have said they told MJ techs about this fix, but should we keep it on the downlow? I'm afraid that they'll mess something up again for us. Sad

I have a hard time getting excited about this...

It seems that if we monkey with something, it will work for a little while, then it will screw up yet again.

Has anybody been running this setup for a month or longer yet?

mh1983 has been trouble free for a month using the Oct. firmware.

Honestly, at first I had my doubts. But, after a week or so, and no dropped calls like before, I started getting my hopes up. Now 15 days later and no dropped calls.......I don't even think about it anymore. Except when I post in here.

It would be interesting to know whether MJ has the capability to block the use of GV Jack through such an update.

Sadly, we just experienced a dropped incoming call this evening (no change to the MJ+ update file or anything). Sad We had a good streak going, but I guess MJ is up to its old ways. Will see over the next while if the overall reliability has been affected at all.

PostPosted: Sun Jun 24, 2012 9:16 am    Post subject: updater file itself is only a conduit for the firmware Reply with quote

According to black_icon and radzkillah on this thread, the updater file doesn't change very often because it's only a conduit for the most current firmware which is always downloaded on-the-fly directly from magicJack servers. The .exe or .dmg file basically checks your magicJack's firmware version and compares it with the most recent version. If you already have the most recent version, it does nothing. If you do not have the most recent version, the new firmware is installed onto your magicJack and you get the 'Lucky You' icon on your desktop to confirm that your firmware has been upgraded.

There is (apparently) no way to download the actual firmware itself explicitly through magicJack's servers. We cannot download different versions of the firmware for local install. We can only the download the software that decides whether your magicJack should be updated.

In other words, any evidence of difference between using October update file vs. March update file is purely anecdotal and this instance, likely to be wishful thinking. Again, this very likely means that as soon as you use any version of the updater, it should automatically update you to the latest version of the firmware for your model of magicJack.

The system is closed and proprietary.
