I sent a magic-jack to my brother in Dubai. But looks like it is blocked by ISP. Is there a workaround to make it work ? Any info will be really appreciated. Thanks. |

My brother is using it in Iran and it is excellent, except for one little problem - We have tested it on several PC's and with several phone sets and in several different locations, but my brother can not receive calls. When I call him, almost immediately the voicemail comes on.
The only constant in all this has been the ISP - the ISP at all our tests has been parsonline, the largest ISP in Iran. Could it be something with them that's blocking things. But then everything else works - it just doesn't make sense. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. |

From what you're saying, your brother from Iran can only make inbound calls to US and he can't receive calls. Ask your brother check and set "ring count" for answering is at least 4 rings. That is the phone has to ring at least 4 times before the answering machine kicks in.
Hope it helps. |

Magic Jack works great in Vicenza, Italy using TKS Internet. All calls go through and I have received calls from the US when I have my laptop connected. |

Works great in Lima Peru and in Ensenada Mexico. My dad has given magicjacks to a few friends in both places and they work great. It is my primary home line here in San Diego. |

I just traveled to Japan and it worked great. For some reason it didn't work at first, but then it turned around and said that it was downloading a patch or something (this was after about a day or trying to make it work) and it started working great. I called back to Georgia and no problems at all. The 30 minute phone conversation with my wife more than paid for having the magic jack. |

It worked fine last week from Berlin Germany (using a hard-drive only version - left the USB dongle at home). It worked ok even with only a 128Kbps connection although the dongle-less version didn't always complete calls on the 1st try but redial, redial, redial and the call would eventually go through. Call quality was ok but I also tried Skype which sounded better (much better computer-2-computer but also computer-2-landline). |

What headset type are you all using?
The phonejack on the MJ is a RJ11 so I guess I
need to find an adaptor to convert into a headset with a microphone?
Anyone have a brand and or model number that works well
for you?
Thanks! |

The headset does not need to plug into the magicjack. It plugs into your computers mic and headphone sockets. You have to change the setting on the magicjack to tell it to use the headset. |

So these would normally be 2.5mm (1/8th inch) jacks
or a USB jack, is that correct?
How about just using the combo mic and earphone
set up that came with my cell phone. Will that work too? |

I believe that the size of the jack for the cell phone is different.
You have to use the one's made specificly for computers. Both the jacks and the USB headphones will work. I hear that the USB headsets work better. |

Has anyone had any success with the magic jack calling from Cuba? They only have 50k modem speeds currently but I was able to use a Pasket8 hookup years ago. |

Packet 8 may use a different codec with higher compression. MJ uses 100k up and down. I can do a speedtest.net test and see 100k difference. So, it really uses that much. Others have said they've gotten by with lower speeds (80k ?). But, I think 56k modem speeds would be too slow.
MJ uses the less efficient codec. Better voice quality. Less dependence upon computer speed. But, more bandwidth.

I suspected as much. Unlike other VOIP services you cannot change the codec?
I'm going to give it a try in April, nonetheless. |

If you really want to see some eyebrows raise, pull your MJ out and plug it into your laptop while you are at sea. The typical roaming rate on a ship with your cell phone is about $2.69 per min. Calls from your cabin on a ship cost $6.99 per min. If you are one who takes a laptop on a cruise, you can use your MJ to call home or wherever for the going rate of their internet access. In our case it was 37 cents per min.
BTW, the connection was maybe not perfect, but certainly acceptable. |

does anyone know if any dialing 'tricks' need to be used to call a U.S. number for a Magic Jack in South Korea. The number assigned to the MJ is a U.S. number.
I'm thinking of those #xx#x - xxx - yyyy tricks. |

I took my MJ to Holland (Netherlands) and called home daily to Canada without any problems. I used a Skype USB phone and set the settings to headsetUSB
And a friend gave a MJ to his daughter when she moved to Poland as well as a cheap $10.00 Walmart phone. She phones home to Canada without any problems.
So both Holland and Poland are OK |

Well I have been living in Ecuador for 8 months now, waiting for my wife's visa so I can go home to NY. I have sold these things to several people all over ecuador. I dont make a profit, I only do it because you would be suprised how many people has family in the states. Well I have realised, at my house my internet speed is only 512kbps which is " High Speed" here. To be honest some times call quilty sucks and some times its good. I see like in the afternoon my internet speed is slow and at night it is rather fast. High Speed Internet is improving, and its really hit and miss. I personally have used my magicjack in
Guayaquil, Ecuador ( wireless/ Antenna)
Duran, Ecuador (cable)
Azogues, Ecuador ( DSL)
Basically for the wireless at my house its like an antenna pointed to the isp and its hooked to a wireless router. It works really good just wish they offered 20mpbs like back in NY.
Give it a few more years!
I first sent my wife a magic jack in ecuador so we can talk, i was tired of spending 50 a week in intl calling. I would go home for a few weeks to see family and make some money. After tht we saved alot and it was easy to call her. Had very few issues.

jcteck88, What you brought up is important. It's not so much the GeeWhiz tech but rather what it can do for people.
Your point about families in various countries (with high long distance rates) being effectively cut off from each other is so true. That's why I have given &/or resold MJs in a good part of the Caribbean.
Some of these phone "C"ompanies are "W"orthless when it comes to serving their customers. In the past they have even disabled the old call-back systems and sued in court even though they knew they were wrong while counting on the delay to put any competition out-of-business.
Thanks for your post that brings to light how important MJ is to people in other countries.. |

If high speed DSL link Ethernet cable or solid WiFi It worked very well, in Valladolid and Cancun.
At Akumal (near Tulum)with strong signal WiFi, it was barely usable, packet losses.
Network is called "Infinitum" in states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan |
