Backup backup backup

On my machine, a clean install went ok if you can install it but not
if you want to install the AMD dual core processor.

On an upgrade, I got the BSOD 15 times. I could run in safe mode but
not in normal mode

Not trying to be rude, but this is an MJ forum, not a Win7 forum.

Why should we care? Question

We should care because people are indeed going to be trying out Windows 7 and seeing if their MagicJacks work in that environment. That is why we should care. Also, Windows 7 may very well go to RTM status by the third quarter of this year and people will be buying pc's and laptops with this operating system installed. Last time I checked, this was the Technical Support area of the forum ?

Well...we cant really expect them to support a beta version of Microsofts next OS. It would be nice to see if MJ were at least working on beta support for it though. I'm running a dual boot system...and was hoping to leave Windows 7 running most of the time. Until someone can figure out a workaround to get MJ running...I guess we will just have to stick with Vista/XP.

I'm also surprised that my MJ doesn't seem to want to work in Win7 beta. Stuff I have that works in XP and Win7 but not in Vista made me optimistic but other than "lighting up" and showing only one CD entry it just doesn't load the second.

Oh well.... Cool

OK, I had to test this for myself and I got it to work. It requires two things.

1. Copy the mjusbsp folder from a working install on XP or Vista to the C:\Users\YourUserName\appdata\Roaming folder in Windows 7.

2. You have to start it the no splash way to get it to load. Otherwise, you will get an error that it's not plugged in.

"C:\Users\YourUserName\appdata\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicjack.exe" /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot X:\magicJack

Just substitute your username and your drive letter for X.

Keep in mind I installed Windows 7 on a vmware image as there is no way I am putting this beta on my real machine. I made a test call from the MJ to my cell phone. I also made a call from my cell phone to the magicjack. Both worked fine. The call was a little choppy at first, but was fine after that.

EDIT: Here's a pic of it. Click it for a very large version of the screenshot.

MJ up and running on Windows 7!

Thank you stroths.

Just browse to the location of your magicjack.exe that you stored in the process above, and CREATE a shortcut (that shortcut will have most of the information you need)! CUT that shortcut and paste it wherever you want it (on your desktop?)
Then just append this stuff to the info in the shortcut: /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot X:\magicJack

Just substitute your username and your drive letter (the one that is NOT the CD) for X.
When you want to activate the magicjack (when plugged-in) just click the shortcut!

Post the exact shortcut you are using including the quotes. Also make sure you are using the correct magicjack drive letter. It will be the one that has a file named "DONT USE THIS DRIVE" in it.

For example, here is my exact shortcut

C:\Users\Steven\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot F:\magicJack

Have spent the last week trying to get my magicjack working under Windows 7. Had it set up with nosplash and would load but then always fail with an error 9 (network connect failure). Finally got it working by changing the startup to run in compatibility mode for Vista. Voila!!! (BTW - thought I had tried this earlier but must have been dreaming)

Ok...what does one do with a totally new system that has windows 7 32 bit version installed? This is a brand new system and couldn't load my xp pro due to it being bundled with the old software and Sony made it to only run with thier systems. Will never buy a prebuilt system ever again either.

Thanks in advance for any help in getting my Magic Jack to run in Win7!

Install vmware and find an image of xp if you can. Here is an image of Windows server 2003 R2. Magicjack should install on it, Once it does, copy your files over.

As far as your Sony copy of XP, there are ways to make it work on your system. You just have to inject some Sony code into your current BIOS and your disc will install just fine thinking its a Sony. If you want to dive into that, do a search for SLP 1.0.

You want to pick the drive letter that is not the cd drive. Pick the other MJ drive letter and see if that does it for you.

That should not make any differnece if the front USB ports are connected to the motherboard like they should be. The performance should be identical. In all my PCs they are. Those USB ports are connected to the motherboard on all my PCs.

I too can't get magicjack to launch on Windows 7 after copying the mjusbsp folder from a running version of XP. I can't figure out what the issue is. The only thing I've done differently is format MJ. It still works on XP, but would that affect how it's run or recognized on windows 7?

The problem some people have reported is that those easy-to-reach front-facing USB ports are connected to the motherboard with a cheap cable. They claim it doesn't perform as well as surface-mounted USB ports.

For computer magicians, these instructions are a piece of cake. I am no comp wiz. Can anyone really break these down to step by step instructions? That would be greatly appreciated. I value my MJ service more than Windows 7. If I can't use my MJ, I would probably revert to XP Pro.

What problem exactly are you having? That post is so old that I'm not sure how much, if any, of it applies.

I have run MJ with Windows 7 for almost a year now with few issues, certainly nothing that would make me change operating systems.

If you can give the details of your problem it would be easier to give suggestions.

Thank you for responding nailgunner. I think the answer partly lies in what I said re my comp background. I spent over 2 hours chatting with a MJ agent and they took me through many, many steps but in the end, nothing worked. Among the steps was changing USB ports, removing the extension USB cord, etc. The (?virtual) agent in the end asked if I had another computer, without admitting she was giving up. As things stand, the MJ icon does appear on the desktop. Then the dial image appears, and all I see is a message "waiting for device" and "starting please wait" but never beyond that. That is the best I can do. I tried appending the text suggested on the shorcut and changing the drive and username, but I got the message that "make sure the path..." "Please be patient, a registration screen will apear shortly"

Thanks. Absolutely none. Both my PC and laptop were using XP and neither had problems whether using a modem or wireless. The Magic Jack device's blue light (not flickering) seems to work, but I may have dropped it once. Could that be a problem? By the way, I spent another couple of hours with an MJ agent -- still unable to get it to work. Basically they had me go through the same steps that did not work yesterday.

Thanks. Absolutely none. Both my PC and laptop were using XP and neither had problems whether using a modem or wireless. It's not the most solid piece of equipment, so dropping it could have done it, especially if it was recent.

Look elsewhere in the forum for tips, but a couple are not using the USB extension cord they give you, and plugging it into a rear USB hub.

I have an old computer that I'm doing photo editing on that is XP. I have just in the last week moved my MJ back and forth between the two computers without doing anything special. So, in my opinion, there is nothing inherent about Windows 7 that should make it not work from the start. There are other issues like auto-starting on reboot, but generally minor things.

If other tips don't work, I would reinstall XP on one of your computers. That will let you know if the device is broken or not.

Thanks nailgunner. Based on simple economics, the cost of a new MJ may be cheaper that XP. So that is the first step. Do you know if Radio Shack will allow returns, in case the new one also does not work? Again thanks for taking time.

Absolutely cheaper. I assumed you had a XP disc to play with on one of the computers.

Yes. I would check with them first. I know Wal-Mart does for sure, for like 30 days. But you need to be careful if you want to keep your current phone number. Don't just plug the new one in and register it. You will get stuck with a new number if you make a wrong step.

Log on to their customer service and tell them what you want to do and they will walk you through it. You will get a year of service from the date you register the new device, not a year plus what was left on the old one.

Make sure the one you buy has an orange sticker on the back, that is the newest generation. And keep both active in case you return the new one. They may ask you to deactivate the old one, but don't until you find the new one works. I have 2 active for another few weeks and can actually still use both. I think it's keeping my 911 from showing on my new device, but that's the only issue I can find.

Then if the new one works, you can get back with them and deactivate the old one.

Play with the USB connection and any other tips you can find in here first before you buy a new device though.
