Can't hear incoming callers - they can hear me just fine...

Please help me trouble shoot. Incoming calls can not be heard on the telephone handset connected to the MagicJack. Callers can hear me just fine.

Do you mean you can't hear ANYTHING AT ALL, or that you can't hear the caller very well due to poor audio quality? If you can't hear anything, then I'd say the phone or MJ device is defective. If you can hear something, but it's very poor audio, then it may be a power supply issue for the MJ device - try a powered USB hub to give more power to the MJ.

Note that I have a MJ that is always choppy with the audio and nothing I tried could fix the issue, including a powered hub. Just before dumping the MJ, I tried getting an ATA and using the SIP settings from the MJ and it works great!

Have you tired making calls with a headset and only the softphone? If not, try it and see if it works. Also, have you tried another telephone? Some phones will not work well with MJ.

You might want to check if you have Microsoft Away Mode enabled.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902437
When your computer enters Away mode, the following actions occur:

* The display is turned off.
* The audio is muted.
* Input devices such as keyboards, mouse devices, and the remote control are filtered to make sure that errant keystrokes are not processed.
* Media playback is stopped, except for live TV.
* The CPU may enter a lower power performance state. This condition occurs if a lower power performance state is supported by the hardware.
* The graphics processor may enter a lower power performance state. This condition occurs if a lower power performance state is supported by the computer's graphics hardware and drivers.
This was enabled by default on my XP Media Center PC. If the computer hadn't been touched in a while, away mode would turn on.

On an incoming call, the phone would ring. When answered, I could not hear the other party, but they could hear me. Disabling away mode fixed this annoyance for me.

I've had MJ for about 7 months and it's been working fine until recently. I am using Vista and I suspect some recent update or something is causing this but I'm not sure. I don't have the 'Away' function mentioned above. Any other thoughts?

Found a fix to my problem

Post by n2fbj17 »

I thought it might be something simple, but I didn't know I had this function. I went to Control Panel, then Sound. On the Playback tab, one of the settings is for Handset-USB Internet Phone by Tigerjet (I didn't know this setting existed). After clicking Properties and chosing the Levels tab, I saw that the mute was on. Presto! Now it works. Hopefully this solves the problem for the others here, too.

Firewall and Inbound Audio

It sees there was bit of a problem with regards to inbound packets through the Verizon Firewall.
I created exceptions for the Magic Jack and both Auto Runs yet still had problems. Magijack continued to say Please Wait, then went to No Network connection error. I disable the Verizon Firewall and it worked fine. I didn't feel comfortable with no firewall, so I enable the windows firewall and ran into a problem.
THE FIX:
  • Disable your ISP Firewall and use windows firewall.
To find the windows firewall click "start" "search/find" type firewall
Click on the one that says "windows firewall" not the advanced on (if there)
On the left choose "allow a program through the windows firewall"
    Click the Exceptions TAB
    Click ADD PORT
Type MagicJack in the name area
Type 5060 in the Port area
    select UDP click OK
follow these steps again but type Magicjack2 and 5070
    click okay
make sure the windows firewall is turned on.
    Start magicjack
If it already on unplug it for 15 seconds and replug it.
Windows fireall may or may not pop up saying it blocked some aspects o the program. If it says this click "allow"
If it does not block it, try making a phone call and then "allow"
    It should solve the problem.
