Suggestion: Google Custom Search

Post by sagerauru »

Having read around on the forums here, I have noticed that some people (Myself included) have difficulty using the phpBB search to try to locate the information they need/want. It is a little crazy having to go through over 900 search results when searching for something such as how to wire your house using the magicJack when Google located the needed information within the first five results (Used the phrase "whole house wiring").

In order to solve this, I offer the suggestion of implementing a Google Custom Search to replace the built-in phpBB search. The process does not seem complicated, and is explained in this post on the phpBB forum. I've seen a lot of threads with their first reply being "use the search" or "search the forums". If the search located the information requested in the first place, it would save users like myself from having to either read through the hundreds of posts that the phpBB search returns in the hopes of finding the information requested or take the plunge and hope that we have not re-posted a question.

Really, it couldn't hurt to have it implemented, especially if it can save everyone's time in the long run. :)

I could not agree more. The search on this forum is way too difficult and impractical.

Glad to see that I am not the only one who feels this way! :-D

To anyone who may find it useful: there is a workaround to use Google to search the forums until it is decided whether or not it is going to be implemented. Go to Google, and in the search box, type it "site:www.phoneservicesupport.com" followed by what you want to search for. This will tell Google to only search for things located on this website and could be used to search any one specific website you want. It functions the same way that a custom search would for the forums and will locate things in a much better manner than the phpBB search.

WoW! That's awesome. I'll have to experiment a little to see what it takes to drill down. Thanks!
