I've been in Dubai for a year. Their general idea is to block something that allows you to circumvent their phone system. There are only two isp's in Dubai..... Etisilat, and Du, both government, and they don't overlap, you get one or the other. Du is in most of the newer areas, like the palm islands and arabian ranches, Etisilat is the older and more established.

Du doesn't block MJ at all, just plug it in and it says ready to call. Du doesn't block chat or video calls in Skype. Du does block dialed Skype calls.... in my experience, you call out, it rings, somebody picks up, and it cuts off. I have the MJ working so I haven't used this in a long time, but that's how it was about 9 months ago.

My try with Etisilat (a year ago) was different. I don't know if it's "blocked" per se, but I do know when you plug in the MJ, it says there's a problem. With online MJ tech help, they said I probably needed to open a couple ports. I could not figure how to do that in the dsl router provided by Etisilat, so I never got it working on that service.

If someone is using the MJ in an Etisilat area, please post how to access the router and open the ports. Or, could I call Etisilat and ask them to open the ports, or is that when we would find out they'd block it?

Not sure how to get it going in an Etisilat area, but looking for ideas or experienced help....

I was recently in DXB and found that while Skype calls to another Skype user were possible, MJ just did'nt work.
MJ online chat support finally told me that that ETISALAT was possibly blocking MJ. BTW , while i could make a skype call, I could,nt access www.skype.com !!
Is there any way that we could still get MJ to work by using VPN such as www.logmein.com ( Hamachi ) or www.hotspotshield.com ??
