Help sending calls are choppy

Post by kmm52 »

I worked with MJ support for a few hours, that is a few hours I will never get back.

I dont have the greatest Internet connection in the world. I am 1 Mbs down and like 500 kbs up. I have a PC that runs the MK, for running just the MJ its overkill. Bottom line I dont think its the PC.

What is throwing me off is this. When someone calls me the connection is fantastic, clear as a bell. When I dial someone else the call is very choppy and you have to really put a lot of effort into hearing what someone is saying.

I have tried all the tricks I could find from switching magic jack servers to setting the priority on the magicjack process in windows. None of the tricks have worked so far, anyone have a magic wand they could wave over my MJ to straigthen this out? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you're on the right track, having tweaked the things you can. It's weird that incoming calls are clear but outgoing ones are not. How do you get your Internet connection? Is your PC connected by ethernet cable to the router? Or wifi?

Your download speed should be okay, a family member gets his Internet by WiMax beamed to an antenna on his house. He's only getting 0.4 MB down and under 0.2 up and the calls are fine (pretty good actually).

Any chance you can try another Internet connection? How portable is your computer?

Also search for "voip test" and see what kind of score you get. Still, weird that incoming calls are clear. Is it clear both ways?

DSL from Qwest.

Is your PC connected by ethernet cable to the router? Plugged directly into the Qwest modem, I bypassed the router to see if that would help.

I have my MJ hooked up to a laptop so this would be a good test to try, next time to go visit family or something I will have to give it a shot.

Yes the conversation is clear both way's. I have done the VOIP test and it did come back saying there is a possibilities for it being choppy, but I would think my internet speeds could handle the minimal bandwidth needed to support MJ, maybe I am wrong. What throws me off is the incoming call is clear as a bell but when I make outgoing its choppy.

Infinite amounts of bandwidth might still result in a choppy conversation because it sounds like your problem is caused by jitter. Jitter is caused by your ISP's inability to delivery IP packets (containing digitized voice in the case of a MJ conversation) in a continuous, undelayed manner. If the VOIP test shows high jitter, then your ISP is at fault because they are causing delays in the packet transmission or delivery. I'm not sure why this would only be the case with outbound calls with inbound being clear. But its worth gving Qwest a call and asking them about jitter on your connection. They may simply say tough - you get what you get and there are no VOIP guarantees. Or they may be able to tune things and make them better. Worth a shot.

Outgoing call quality choppy incoming good

Post by lloydw »

I have the exact same issue, outgoing calls very choppy while incoming are excellent. I have tried the MJ on 3 computers (2 winxp, 1 windows 7), all have the same issue. Did the voip internet test all parameters are within good range including jitter. Tried 3 different handsets two cordless and one wired, all the same problem.

Current machine connected direct to WRT300 linksys router, also have tried direct connect to Netgear router. One thing I have not tried yet is powered USB hub, but after 3 computers confidence is low this will help. I have good bandwidth 5Mbs down and 1Mbs up on a fixed wireless ISP connection.

Any ideas greatly accepted and appreciated.

A good thing to try is to connect to a different MJ server. While running wireshark over the past 10 months I have found the call quality to differ greatly for me from one server to the other. Incoming calls may sound great as they may come from a different server. If you do not block the server your MJ is set for all your outgoing calls will go through that server. I block around 10 different MJ servers that have given me choppy audio in the past. This is not a guarantee that your calls will get better but it eliminates a usual cause of the problem. I would also try another voip provider as well to see if the results are any better. Callcentric will allow a free trial to see if you like their service. This would be a good test to see if the problems are with MJ or your isp.

Choppy outgoing calls resolved

Post by lloydw »

After trying everything I else, I switched the toggle on the soft phone to Air 3G from the 'Normal' setting and seems to have cleared up the issue. Not sure why, but I'm happy it seems ok now.

Magic Jack chat help for choppy audio

Post by shumiron »

I was on chat with MJ techs for quite a while to fix a couple problems - MJ was getting errors related to majicjack.exe application error and choppy or fading audio on calls after 5 minutes or so.

The final resolution they had me do was to go into the network connection, TCP/IP properties and change dns server from automagically detect to this address - 67.90.152.122. The tech said that change resolved both my issues. I have been running MJ for a few hours since then and everything seems to be OK. I am running on a Thin Client dedicated to MJ.
